Puppy Training by Lisa Chapman

Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB)

Puppy packages are offered within 30 minutes of Lee on the Solent and for puppies starting under 18 weeks old. Those enrolling before you bring your puppy home will be offered a free virtual 30-minute session on preparing for your puppy, as this preventative approach to puppy training has the most success.

We aim to assess your puppy’s personality as an individual and tailor a training package that works on their needs to become a well-rounded dog. Every puppy is different, some will have lower frustration tolerance or higher impulsivity and so their course will be designed to help them learn better. Others may need extra help with confidence building and some may need a varied approach. Because every puppy is an individual, I will help to guide you on their individual needs.

We will be working on some or all of the following skills depending on the package and your priorities with your puppy: ‘I can be calm’, ‘I can listen’, ‘I know and can follow the rules’, ‘I can say please’, ‘I like to be touched’, ‘I have confidence’, ‘I like surprises’ and ‘I have the right to be a dog’.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

When should I start training my puppy?

As soon as you bring your puppy home, which is typically around 8 weeks old, they will be learning from your interactions with them and the environment you have created for them. Getting this right is crucial for setting good habits and preventing behavioural problems down the line. Training should not be thought of as set sessions but as learning that occurs all the time. Because of this, preparing well before you get your puppy is ideal, or as soon as possible otherwise.

The sessions I offer are designed to empower you to understand how your puppy learns so you can utilise this knowledge in your day-to-day interactions with them. Some training tasks like recall, sit, stay, etc, will be time-focused and need practice, but this is a small percentage of their overall learning.

Should I ignore my puppy’s crying when I first bring them home?

When your puppy is brand new to the home, having come away from its mum and littermates, they are very vulnerable to feeling scared and anxious. This is also a time when it is vulnerable to learning that being alone is unpleasant, which can lead to separation anxiety. It is much better to preventively settle with your puppy and be close by for their first few nights and ignore any outdated advice, such as letting them cry it out.

Why is my puppy biting and chewing so much?

Puppy biting and chewing is normal behaviour that is part of exploratory learning and a comforter for stress, commonly being tired and hungry. It can be exacerbated due to pain, such as tooth pain, for example. Finding appropriate and novel outlets that your puppy can bite on without damaging their teeth to give to them when they need to bite will reduce the likelihood of them biting you! Be vigilant for other reasons that you may need to address first, such as hunger, tiredness, pain and stressors to help your puppy feel better without biting so much.

Should I crate train my puppy?

Every puppy needs a safe space, and many puppies love to be in their own crate if introduced to it correctly (and if it is never used as a place of punishment). Crates do not suit every puppy, however, and this can depend on many factors that are individual to the puppy, such as how they were reared with the breeder and how they cope with barriers. Other safety options for puppies include pet gates and pens, but remember each puppy is an individual, and their safe space may not be the same as another puppy’s.
